The Difference Between Electric Cylinder and Linear Actuator

The linear actuator and the electric cylinder are both devices that convert the rotating motion of the motor into a linear reciprocating motion.In terms of motion control, two commonly used components are electric cylinders and linear actuators.  While both have similar uses, there are clear differences between these devices that make them suitable for different applications.


1, the difference of travel

The travel of the electric cylinder is longer than that of the linear actuator. The standard stroke of the general linear actuator is 100,150,200,250,300,350,400 mm, and the stroke of the electric cylinder can be 1.7 meters. But linear actuator can be driven by various types of motors, including DC motors and stepper motors, and can be customized to suit specific stroke lengths and force requirements.


2, Difference in thrust

A key difference between the two is the most force they can produce. Electric cylinders can produce higher forces, up to twenty or thirty tons, and are often used for heavy duty applications. The linear actuator is usually used for light applications, and the linear actuator with different thrust can be designed according to different application loads, generally its maximum thrust can reach 6000N.


3. Difference in speed

The speed of the electric cylinder is faster than the speed of the linear actuator. The no-load operating speed of the linear actuator is 4mm~35mm/s, but the operating speed of the electric cylinder can reach 1M/S.


4. Difference in voltage requirements

In terms of voltage requirements, linear actuators have two options of 12V and 24V, while electric cylinders usually require a higher voltage of about 120V.


5. Differences in maintenance requirements

In terms of maintenance, electric cylinders require regular lubrication and inspection of seals to ensure smooth and reliable operation. Linear actuators, on the other hand, do not require the same level of maintenance and are generally considered more durable and reliable.
