How to Control the Stroke of a Linear Actuator

A linear actuator is a powerful device that uses an electric motor to convert rotational motion into linear motion. In linear actuator equipment, one of the important devices included is the stroke control device, and one of the challenges of using linear actuators is to control the stroke.


The stroke is the distance the actuator can travel between the fully extended and fully contracted position. In order to control the travel of the actuator, it is necessary to adjust the length of the extension linear actuator. In general, there are two transmission forms, one is the turboworm transmission form, and the other is the gear transmission form.


1. Turboworm transmission form

The scroll rod on the motor gear drives the turbine to rotate, so that the small screw rod in the turbine moves axially, and the limit rod is driven by the connecting plate to move axially accordingly. When the required stroke is reached, the power is off by adjusting the limit block to press down the stroke switch, and the motor stops running.


2, Gear transmission form

The motor drives the small lead screw installed in the inner tube through the reduction gear and drives the axial running nut connected with it. When the nut antenna presses the limit switch to disconnect the power supply, the motor stops moving. (A limit switch is a device that detects the position of an actuator and stops it when it reaches a predetermined position.)


3, optional potentiometer to display the stroke state of the push rod operation, such as 12V linear actuator with built-in control system. An encoder can also be added to realize the complete journey in several steps.


Controlling the stroke of a linear actuator can be a challenge, but there are several ways to help you achieve the desired stroke length. Whether you are using an adjustable extension rod, an external limit switch or a built-in control system, proper sizing and careful consideration of the requirements of your application are the keys to successful linear actuator control.
